Artist Statement

I paint landscapes and fauna using the traditional fresco process of applying pigments to a freshly prepared, wet lime plaster surface. As the plaster dries it sets, and the colors bonding with the plaster become an integral part of the plaster itself. the plaster is then 'closed', or burnished with a metal blade, to create the smooth finish. This gives a sculptural and organic feeling to the canvas.

My compositions invoke the interesting duality of the abstract aesthetic perception and the concrete pleasure of immediate tactile experience. While an impressionistic style allows the viewer to intrepret colors and forms on the canvas from an objective perspective, the compelling texture of the plaster and the primary beauty of layers of color afford the viewer a subjective, palpable experience. For me this duality of visual distance and tactile immediacy provides a harmony of emotion and creativity.

I am inspired by embedded color and embedded memory-individual and collective. Landscapes and frescoes naturally summon this intimate union of present with past.
